Congratulations to the USO of Metropolitan Washington for launching a wonderful new program with Giant Food Stores this past Thursday! (For those of you who are not familiar with Giant, it is a major supermarket chain.)
Giant stores around the DC area will sell CareOne care packages that customers can buy for $1, $3, $5 or more. Each package contains basic needs like a toothbrush and toothpaste, ibuprofen, hand sanitizer, and lip balm. At the front of each store, customers can make their care package donations and Giant will send them to the USO to be distrubted to local USO lounges at the airports.
USO Metro’s President Elaine Rogers explained to local news station 9NEWS NOW that these simple and basic necessities are hot items. When soldiers come back from deployment and 20 hours of travel on a plane, those basics and simple items are exactly what they need. The care packages are also intended for families of wounded soldiers come to the DC area to visit loved ones.
To be quite honest, I typically don’t shop at Giant. I’m pretty loyal to another neighborhood food chain. But with this new partnership, I cannot wait to make a visit and make a donation!
